Goldie Hawn Reveals Why Her Relationship with Kurt Russell Works: "Why Should We Get Married?"

After being together for 40 years, renowned actors Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have consistently shown no interest in marriage.

During an interview on CNN's "Who's Talking to Chris Wallace?" last week, the Oscar-winning actress questioned the idea of getting married, stating, "Why should we get married? Isn't that a better question?"

Hawn, 77, and Russell, 72, first met over 50 years ago and have been romantically involved since the 1980s. Despite sparking marriage rumors in 1989 when Russell appeared to propose to Hawn while presenting at the Academy Awards, the couple has chosen not to tie the knot.

Explaining their perspective, Hawn said, "Because we have been married, and when it doesn't work out, it ends up becoming a big business. Somebody has to own something. It's always ugly." Hawn had been married twice before entering her relationship with Russell, who had also been married once previously. She continued, "Somebody has to actually take a look and say, 'How many divorces are fun? How many divorces actually don't cost money? How many divorces make you even hate the person more than you did before? How many divorces have hurt children?'"

Hawn emphasized that she and Russell remain together by choice every day. She values the ability to wake up in the morning and make decisions about their relationship on a daily basis. Hawn believes that maintaining independence and individual thinking is crucial for both partners. She expressed, "So you can hold on to yourself, and you're going to actually have that feeling."

In a previous interview on the British daytime talk show "Loose Women" in 2016, Hawn stated that being together "68% of the time" is ideal for her. She humorously remarked, "I would've been long divorced if I'd been married."

Hawn and Russell have one son together, 37-year-old actor Wyatt Russell. They also have children from their previous marriages: Oliver, 46, and Kate Hudson, 44, who were born from Hawn's marriage with ex-husband Bill Hudson, as well as Boston Russell, Kurt's son with Season Hubley.

Reflecting on their relationship, Hawn shared that approximately 10 years into their partnership, they asked their children if they wanted them to get married. The response was a resounding "No!" as the children preferred their parents to remain unmarried. Hawn explained, "They love it. It was perfect the way it is; they didn't want any more trouble. They wanted us to be not married."

Hawn and Russell first met on the set of the 1968 film "The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band," when Russell was a teenager, with Hawn being five years older. Since then, they have collaborated on several projects, including their initial reunion on the set of the 1984 movie "Swing Shift," which marked the beginning of their romantic relationship.

Most recently, they worked together on Netflix's "The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two." Hawn expressed her admiration for Russell's work ethic, stating, "I like Kurt when he's working, a lot. He's generous, he's good-natured, really talented and inventive and creative. It's just a joy, really, to work with him."

Despite their enduring partnership, Hawn and Russell have chosen to forgo the institution of marriage, prioritizing their independence, happiness, and the well-being of their blended family.
